Split is Croatia’s main ferry port and a prime city break destination with bustling restaurants, bars and cafes aplenty. It’s a characterful city, where Croatia’s dynamic present is as well represented as its compelling past. Explore the evocative alleys of the Old Town and the remnants of an old Roman palace, linger a while at sleek seafront cafes or idle around the seductive Bačvice Beach.
A Brief History
Split’s beginnings can be traced back to the Roman Emperor Diocletian who chose to build his palatial retirement complex here in the late third century. When the Roman Empire fell, Diocletian’s palace lay abandoned until a new community resettled in the ruins during medieval times. While Split has long outgrown the boundaries of the old palace, Diocletian’s digs still remain at its heart.
Seeing the Sights
With a rich history and a beguiling coastline, Split has much to occupy visitors. Chief among the historic attractions is the picturesque Old Town, contained within the confines of the shell of the old Roman palace. While these alleyways offer a glimpse into the ancient settlement, museums such as the Maritime Museum and the City Museum reveal more of its history. Ascend Marjan hill – a pine-forested parkland – for views over the cobalt Adriatic or take a dip at ground level at the shingle and sand Bačvice Beach.
Split’s biggest draw is its vivacious atmosphere. Life here takes place outdoors and the buzzing activity is best observed during a wander around the stone streets or over a drink on a sunny café terrace. Between mid-July and mid-August, culture moves out into the open air as the Split Summer Festival hosts various outdoor music and drama performances.
