Makarska Riviera

The town of Makarska is a bustling tourist destination which does, nonetheless as part of the Makarska Riveria,  have a rich cultural and historical heritage as well as some superb sea views and a fascinating hinterland.

For the energetic, there are numerous facilities such as tennis, volleyball, as well as a huge range of of water sports including water ski-ing, wind or kite surfing  in the crystal clear sea.

There are some lovely walks along the small harbour and beaches. Mountain lovers can take one of the numerous mountain trails to the peaks of Biokovo Mountain. And for those who are really fit – it’s great mountain biking terrain.


At the summit of the Biokovo mountains, there are excellent views down to the beach and across the sea towards the islands of Brac and Hvar.

The town of Makarska itself a small port and town in a large horseshoe shaped cove and gives its name to the entire Riviera area. It has a historic centre with the a newly developed area which has plenty of hotels, restaurants, shops and bars.

To the north-west is a large park and pine forest, which surrounds an 1,500-m long beach at Donja Luka. Further along the coastline are numerous shingle coves, separated by natural limestone crags. This area definitely has something for everyone, whatever your expectation for your Croatia holiday.

A little further down from Makarska is Tucepi – a man made resort – it may not be stuffed full of old stone buildings, but it is totally spick and span.  Tucepi has a lovely promenade and marina – and is a lovely place to relax and unwind and has plenty of bars and restaurants to enjoy a leisurely evening meal.  And almost equidistant between Split and Dubrovnik and just managing to be considered as part of Makarska, is the beautiful village of Gradac.
