As you come into land at Dubrovnik airport, you will already catch a glimpse of what makes this area so stunning. Hundreds of islands all surrounded by turquoise water will whet your appetite for exploring this fascinating region.

Dubrovnik itself is steeped in history dating as far back as the 7th Century. Now listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, it is now fully restored to its former glory.

Dubrovnik Old City itself is totally pedestrianised and walled. You may consider taking a walking tour high above the city around the ramparts. At night, these are lit which gives it a real fairy-tale feel.

There is plenty of night-life to enjoy whatever your taste. If you simply want to sit and watch the world go by, enjoy a nightclub, or savour some of the finest fish restaurants in the country, then this is the place for you. We particularly enjoyed Lokanda Peskarija, a small restaurant right on the harbour which seats about 35 people in total. They don’t take bookings so you may have to queue ! But – its worth it – try the mussels – and their sardines – delicious !

Dubrovnik is perfect for those who wish to combine some culture with a relaxing holiday in the sun. The nearby islands of Sipan and Lopud are within easy striking distance and accessible either by ferry or water taxi. The resort of Lapad is approximately 20 minutes walk away but there are plenty of buses and taxis to be found if you prefer to really take it easy.

Lapad is built on a horseshoe shaped bay and has a superb promenade which makes for a great leisurely evening stroll. There are many bars and cafes to stop off for refreshment along the way. There is also a large shingle beach here with the clearest waters for swimming.

The other side of Dubrovnik and closer to the airport lies the peaceful resort of Cavtat. This has a more intimate ‘unchanged’ feel to it – fishermen sell their wares on the quay so you can’t get fresher fish! A small resort for those wishing to really get away from it all, yet only approx 20 minutes from bustling Dubrovnik if it all gets a little too quiet!
